Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola tried to sign both Lionel Messi and Neymar from former club Barcelona in the summer.
The City boss did capture Ilkay Gundogan, Nolito, Leroy Sane, John Stones, Gabriel Jesus and Claudio Bravo during the summer window, with the latter arriving from Barcelona, but The Sun claims he also tried to snare attacking pair Messi and Neymar.
The City boss reportedly held talks with the players' representatives but was unable to do a deal.
Neymar is understood to have rejected a huge offer from Paris Saint-Germain in order to stick at Camp Nou and he is tied down to a long-term deal.
Messi is due to to fall out of contract in 2018 and there is speculation Guardiola could return for the Argentina international next summer.
However, Barcelona are keen to extend Messi's deal and the player himself has suggested he will return to his homeland when he does leave Barcelona.
