Happy-go-lucky Barmy Army fans enjoying India

Faridabad: Most members of the Barmy Army, a group of committed supporters of the English cricket team, may have gone home but those still around are thoroughly enjoying themselves on the last leg of their India tour.

As about 100-odd Barmy Army members watched the second one-day international here Friday, they basked under the sun that played hide and seek with clouds over the Nahar Singh Stadium.

The high point of the Barmy Army, or of other English fans, in India came during the third Test in Mumbai between March 18 and 22 when roughly 3,000-4,000 fans gathered there to watch the match at Wankhede Stadium.

Steven Allen, who works in an oil company in London, thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Mumbai. He was also in Delhi where he watched the first one-day international last Tuesday and came to the Nahar Singh Stadium here Friday.

"I enjoyed myself in Mumbai, watched the Delhi match and am enjoying here too," Allen, who had only his trousers on, told IANS here. He said only about 100-odd English fans would have been left watching the seven-match one-day series because the tickets are hard to come by.

"It's difficult to get the tickets for the one-dayers, unlike the Tests. In Tests, several former England Test players had organised the tour," he said. "I got the tickets for the two one-dayers through my company, which has an office in Mumbai."

Allen said he also went to Agra to see the Taj Mahal during his trip.

Another group of three young English fans looked cheerful even though it took them two hours to reach Faridabad from Delhi by a local train.

"It took a long time to come here to buy match tickets here yesterday, so we thought we would take a local train to Faridabad. But it started at 8 a.m. instead of 7 a.m. and we reached the stadium at 10," said one of them.

"But it's okay. Thanks for your hospitality," said another.
