Alan Shearer Could Become Blackburn Rovers Manger

Rovers have received more than 40 applications for the manager's job but have refused to confirm whether Alan Shearer's was among them.

The former Rovers striker has been linked with the job made vacant.

A club spokesman confirmed to BBC Sport the board had been meeting on Monday to discuss the vacancy and hoped to appoint a new manager within 10 days.

Other names linked include Paul Ince and former England boss Steve McClaren.

But the former England captain has been frequently questioned about his managerial aspirations, particularly in relation to his home town club Newcastle United.

And in February, when linked with the vacancy at his first league club, Southampton, he told BBC Radio Solent that he would be "very busy for the next six or seven months" with his BBC commitments, charity work, and work towards his Uefa Pro Licence.

Meanwhile McClaren publicly admitted his interest in the Ewood Park vacancy at the weekend.
