Alex Ferguson has criticised his side for missing a penalty on Sunday against Fulham which saw them drop two points as they could only manage a 2-2 draw.

Manchester United travelled to Craven Cottage for their second match of the new Premier League season and it wasn't long before they were off the mark as Paul Scholes found the back of the net in the eleventh minute.

Ferguson had been full of praise for Scholes last week as he was the driving force behind their opening win and the veteran showed that he didn't just set goals up but can still score a few as United took the lead.

But Fulham are looking to capitalise on their excellent season last year, which saw them reach the Europa League final, and just over ten minutes into the second half they were level as Evra saw the ball taken off him by Duff.

Duff passed the ball through to Bobby Zamora who found Davies who levelled the score. but it was United who had more chances on goal as Vidic and Nani both came close.

United regained the lead six minutes from time when Hangeland scored an own goal and they could have sealed the win when Nani stepped up to take the penalty just minutes from time.

But keeper David Stockdale came to the rescue as he kept Nani's shot out and Fulham in the match. And in the eighty ninth minute Hangeland made up for his own goal as he fired home the equaliser to earn Fulham a much deserved point.

Speaking to MUTV Ferguson said: "When you get the chance to seal the game with that penalty you should be taking it. It was a missed opportunity and it galvanised them, got the crowd up and they scored the equaliser.

"When we got that second goal I thought 'we've escaped here'," admitted Ferguson. "But to miss a penalty kick to make it 3-1, you're throwing two points away there I'm afraid.

"In fairness to Fulham they were the better team in the second half. I don't think we deserved to be in front at 2-1. They caused us a lot of problems, particularly Bobby Zamora who was very good for them. We can't complain in terms of the run of the game."

And Ferguson admitted that he though that Ryan Giggs should have taken the penalty instead of Nani.

"I thought Ryan should have taken it," stated the United manager. "In the last game we played against Tottenham at home Ryan scored two penalty kicks and Nani was on the pitch the same day. Maybe Ryan should have taken it."
