Andy Carroll has revealed that he was not wanted at Newcastle.

Carroll became the most expensive British player in transfer history yesterday when he signed for Liverpool for £35 million.

The Newcastle striker was brought in to replace the departing Fernando Torres but the twenty two year old insists that he was forced to hand in a transfer request.

Speaking to the Evening Chronicle the striker said: "(Managing director) Derek Llambias asked me to hand in a transfer request, so I was pushed into a corner and had no choice. I wasn't wanted by them and they made it clear they wanted the money.

"Then I flew down in (owner Mike Ashley's) helicopter. I didn't want to leave.

"I'm gutted that I wasn't wanted at my home team after everything I have done and the progress I have made. I didn't want to leave at all.

"The players, staff and fans were fantastic. Make sure they know I didn't want to leave."

However Newcastle manager Alan Pardew disputed Carrol’s claim stating that he was not forced to leave the club.

Carroll now has a big job on his hands as Liverpool, who have struggled for consistency all season, look to climb back up the table.

They currently lie seventh but are five points behind Sunderland.

Liverpool also brought a second new striker to the club as they signed Luis Suarez from Ajax for £22.7 million.
