It was perhaps the clash of the third round of the Carling Cup as Premiere League heavyweight Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur went head to head.
But Arsene Wenger's side needed extra time and two penalties to finally see of their London rivals after the score finished 1-1 at the end of ninety minutes.
Samir Nasri was the coolest man on the pitch as he stepped up to the penalty spot twice to put Arsenal ahead and then extend their lead.
Wenger had to watch his side from the stand as he served his touchline ban but he had made eight changes to his side which drew 1-1 with Sunderland at the weekend, while Redknapp made ten changes to his squad.
It was all Arsenal in the first half and it took just fifteen minutes to break the deadlock as Henry Lansbury slid in on a Jack Wilshere cross to find the back of the net.
Despite Arsenal being the better side in the opening forty five minutes Tottenham did try to hit back before the break as David Bentley missed two chances and Roman Pavlyuchenko hit the side netting.
But Tottenham seemed to have picked their game up in the second half as he brought Robbie Keane and Aaron Lennon on for Giovani dos Santos and Jake Livermore.
And Keane's impact was almost immediate as he levelled the match in the forty ninth minute as he picked up a pass from Naughton and shot from eighteen yards.
Tottenham continued to push, Lennon and Sandro both coming close. And while Wenger sent on Arshavin and Chamakh the last chance of the ninety minutes fell to Keane as he hit the post with seconds to go.
But Arsenal pulled themselves together in extra time as they needed just a minute to once again get their noses ahead when Nasri was brought down in the box.
And it was Nasri himself who stepped up to take the penalty as he sent the keeper the wrong way for a 2-1 lead.
Just minutes later and it was Chamakh who had earnt a penalty when Caulker had grabbed his arm inside the box, and Nasri extended their lead.
And Arsenal added a fourth at the end of the first half of extra time when Arsavin was there to slot home a header from Bentley that had come off the post.
It wasn't a good night for Bolton as they crashed out of the competition as they fell to Championship side Burnley 1-0.
West Ham saw off Sunderland 2-1 while Leicester beat ten man Portsmouth 2-1 and Fulham fell 2-0 to Stoke.
