Arsenal will be without captain Cesc Fabregas for two to three weeks after the Spaniard picked up a hamstring injury at the weekend.
Fabregas limped off the field after just half an hour against Sunderland after scoring the opening goal in the thirteenth minute.
The Gummers' captain has just begun to find his form after ending last season with an injury before coming through a difficult summer of transfer speculation.
But Fabregas underwent a scan yesterday and Arsenal revealed the extent of the damage.
A statement on the club's official website read: "Arsenal Football Club have confirmed that Cesc Fabregas will be out for two to three weeks.
"The Spanish midfielder gave the visitors an early lead at Sunderland on Saturday but then picked up a hamstring injury.
"He was substituted just before the half-hour. The extent of the injury was discovered after a scan on Monday afternoon."
The injury means that he will not be available for the Carling Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur tonight or the Champions League match with Partizan Belgrade next week.
