Liverpool proved they are still a force to be reckoned with in Europe after a great 4-0 win over Real Madrid at Anfield, thanks to goals from Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Andrea Dossena. And the score line could have been much heavier were it not for a great performance from Madrid keeper Iker Casillas.

Entering the match with a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, Madrid barely had a chance on goal in the first half as the Reds ran riot. Torres almost scored after just three minutes but Casillas kept him out. The keeper showed his class in the resulting corner, leaping to turn Javier Mascherno's 20 yard shot on to the bar.

Liverpool got their first goal after 16 minutes courtesy of Torres. The striker raced to the six yard box with the ball, and put a simple finish on Dirk Kuyt's cross. Real complained that Torres had fouled Pepe in the build up but their protests were waved away.

Liverpool doubled their advantage after 28 minutes when Steven Gerrard netted from the spot after Gabriel Heinze was, perhaps harshly, penalised for handling in the area.

Real had some shots themselves with Pepe Reina saving from Wesley Sneijder and Gonzalo Higuain but they were outclassed.

Just two minutes after the break Steven Gerrard ultimately killed off any hopes for Madrid when he hit home Ryan Babel's cross making it 3-0.

Substitute Dossena added the fourth with just two minutes to go when he made his way, unchallenged, into the area and turned in the ball.

The only sour point for Liverpool was Mascherano's yellow card for kicking the ball away.

Chelsea made their way too into the quarter finals after twice cancelling out Juventus's lead to earn a 2-2 draw with goals from Michael Essien and Didier Drogba. They go through with an aggregate score of 3-2.
