Manchester United made their way through to the quarter finals of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan.
Vidic was back in the starting line up after his suspension ruled him out of the first leg and made an almost immediate impact heading Ryan Giggs' corner past keeper Julio Cesar and into the net after just four minutes.
United may have took the lead but they were still under pressure from Inter who dominated for spells. Zlatan Ibrahimovic could have equalised for Inter on 28 minutes when he beat Edwin Van der Sar but could only hit the bar with his header.
United almost got the second just before the break with Rooney passing to an unmarked John O'Shea bur Cesar blocked him. Inter missed another chance when Dejan Stankovic shot from point-blank range flew over the bar.
Cristiano Ronaldo relieved some of the pressure with his goal four minutes after the break, heading home from Rooney's cross.
Substitute Adriano almost pulled one back for Inter but turned Esteban Cambiasso's cross onto the post.
Cesar still had his work cut out for him having to deny Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov and Inter but it ended 2-0 with United going through to the quarter finals.
Arsenal also booked their place in the quarters. They lost 1-0 to Roma on the night leaving them with an aggregate score of 1-1 so had to face a penalty shoot-out which they eventually won 7-6.
Last night's other Champions League results:
Barcelona 5-2 Lyon (agg 6-3)
FC Porto 0-0 Atletico Madrid (agg 2-2)
