David Beckham has admitted that he is 'crushed' at England losing out to host the 2018 World Cup.

The former Manchester United player and England captain was part of the bid team that pitched to Fifa in Zurich yesterday, alongside Prince William and Prime Minister David Cameron.

And while the momentum seemed to be with England, who had one of the strongest bids, going into the vote but there was disappointment as they were eliminated in the first round.

Twelve votes were needed from twenty two Fifa members to secure the 2018 World Cup but England only managed one and were out of the running early.

Speaking to Sky Sports Beckham said: "When you put so much work into something and you don't get anything from it, then it is crushing.

"A lot of people have done a lot of hard work and we deserve to host the World Cup. Let's hope we get it at some point.

"The way we presented our country was exceptional. I think we would have put on one of the best World Cups in history."

Russia secured the twelve votes that were required in the second round, seeing off tough competition from the bid from Spain/Portugal.

And while questions have been raised whether the media reports on Fifa earlier in the week had damaged the big.

Beckham said: "I've heard the rumours that we lost due to the British press. I hope that isn't the reason. I believe in a free press and they are incredibly supportive of the game I love."

The vote for the 2022 World Cup also went ahead yesterday and Qatar, who have never qualified for the World Cup, will be hosting the event in twelve years time.
