David Beckham has revealed that he is still hopeful to put on an England shirt once again under manager Fabio Capello.
The former Manchester United player didn't play in South Africa during England's disastrous World Cup after he ruptured his Achilles whist playing for AC Milan.
And it looked like his international career was over when Capello announced in a TV interview that Beckham was 'too old', a decision that he did retract.
But Beckham has not given up on his England career, he had hinted that he would like to be in Brazil in four years time, and has revealed that Capello has hinted that he could play.
Speaking to the BBC Beckham said: "He's said if you're playing well and you're fit you can play."
And while Capello has seemingly given his support to the thirty five year old the Italian has suggested that Beckham needs to be playing football in Europe. But while the U.S. soccer league takes a break Beckham believes that he needs to rest.
"I think I need a rest, my body needs that," he said. "I've been hitting it quite hard for the last couple of years and the injury is because of that.
"So I think it's now time for me to maybe look at myself, look at my fitness and make sure I have that first before I make any other decisions."
While announcement of Capello's 'retirement' of Beckham did shock many people, as well as Capello facing more criticism, Beckham admits that there is no hard feeling.
"Obviously it was a surprise when Fabio Capello said I was too old. He spoke to me after that (television interview) and explained everything to me and it was all brushed under the carpet.
"At the end of the day, the manager's got a job to do and he's doing that well."
