Didier Drogba has been banned for at least four European matches next season after his outburst as Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League to Barcelona.
The striker was banned for six games in total, with two suspended for two years. Drogba’s Chelsea team-mate Jose Bosingwa was also handed a ban for three European games.
They were both found guilty of firing insulting comments towards the referee Tom Henning Ovrebo during their Champions League semi-final at Stamford Bridge.
The pair complained about a series of decisions made by Ovrebo, including a string of penalty appeals that were waved away by the referee, which resulted in a 1-1 draw with the Spanish club.
Barcelona went through to the final on the away goals rule and faced Manchester United; they went on to lift the trophy.
Even after the final whistle had been blown a string of Chelsea players surrounded the referee to voice their displeasure.
As well as bans for the two players Chelsea was also fined £85,000.
The Uefa’s head of communications Rob Faulkner told Radio 5 Live: "The actions of the players were certainly not of a sporting nature.
"Everything has been taken into account. The club will be informed officially in writing and then they have three days in which to consider whether to appeal or not."
