Everton's poor run of form continues as they crashed out of the Carling Cup at the hands of League One side Brentford.

Both Jermaine Beckford and Phil Jagielka missed their penalties during the shoot off to see Everton's miserable start to the 2010 season continue.

The Merseyside team were looking for their first win this season and made a bright start as it took them just six minutes to break through the Brentford defence.

The goal came courtesy of Séamus Coleman as he picked up the ball from Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and found a way past Brentford's keeper.

And Everton looked like they were ready to add more goals to their tally as Ayegbeni Yakubu and Brentford both came close.

With some fine saves from Lee the game never got away from Brentford and McDonald came close as he headed his shot over the bar.

But just before half time Brentford got the equaliser as Weston, who had troubled the visitors all night, crossed the ball into Alexander who found the back of the net.

And Brentford could have taken the lead when Coleman found Weston in the box resulting in a penalty by Muncha came to the rescue as he saved mcDonald's shot.

Everton tried to hit back in the second half as Bilyaletdinov, Magaye Gueye and Fellaini all came close as they desperately tried to find the goal that would edge them ahead.

But a second goal for either side didn't come in the ninety minutes and extra time was needed to try and find a winner.

It was all Everton in the first fifteen minutes of extra time as Osman and Jagielka both missed chances to end the game.

Everton continued to pepper the Brentford goal in the second half of extra time and the home side looked content to try and hang on for penalties.

The first five penalties all found the back of the net until Lee, who had had a great evening in goal, saved the shot from Beckford before mcDonal found the back of the net to lead 4-3.

Jagielka had to score to keep Everton in the match but he hit the post to send them crashing out.
