Harry Redknapp has come to the defence to David Beckham as he hit back at claims that the former England captain is past his best.

The Tottenham Hotspur is hoping to bring Beckham to White Hart Lane for a short loan spell, during America’s off season, and a deal could be struck this weekend.

But many have questioned whether Beckham, who is now thirty five year old, will be able to stay with the pace of the Premier League.

But Redknapp revealed to the Daily Mirror that he has no worries about the fitness of the LA Galaxy star.

“David will be fit. He wouldn’t come if he wasn’t fit. Have you ever seen him looking fat? He’s got no reason to put himself on offer.

“He’s not a punch drunk champion who’s washed up, skint and comes and has another fight and gets knocked out. This is a boy who’s in, not the prime of him football life, but in the prime of his life.

“You only need to see the reception he got at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. It’s amazing what a career the kid’s had. And I like him.

“He ain’t a fool is he? He can’t be, he’s a clever boy. He’s become more worldly and smart. Do you really think he’s going to come here with his fantastic reputation as a world class footballer and - as rich as the boy is - make himself look like a fool, ruin his whole reputation in seven weeks?”

Tottenham were looking to cement their position inside the top four but things didn’t quite go to plan when they lost 2-1 to Everton.

Tottenham remain fourth but are now four points behind third placed Arsenal and just one point ahead of struggling Chelsea who are fifth.
