John Terry admits that it's a 'devastating' blow to lose captain Rio Ferdinand.
The Manchester United defender was ruled out of the competition after picking up an injury during a training session.
Terry was due to partner Ferdinand in defence and that partnership was expected to be key as England try to win the World Cup.
Speaking to The Times the former captain said: "It is devastating to lose Rio. I was looking forward to playing alongside him. He has picked up an injury that was no one’s fault in training.
"It was one of those freak accidents that happen occasionally. It is just disappointing that is has happened to our captain and one of our most influential players.
"It is great for him to be out here and still want to be part of the squad. He realises we still have a very good chance. If we can go a long way, a lot of that will be dedicated to Rio."
Despite the blow Terry remains upbeat about England's chances and believes that both Ledley King and Jamie Carragher are excellent replacements.
"Fortunately enough I played with Ledley when we were kids a few years ago. I have kept in touch with him over the years. The understanding is there. That will be good enough for us to play alongside each other.
"Carragher also came in and did well again. It is up to the manager. I am sure he will give us enough time on the training pitch to be able to play with each other."
England were in action in Monday in their final warm up match, beating the Platinum Stars 3-0, before they face the USA in their first group match on Saturday.
