Manchester United Draw With Rangers

Manchester United made a poor start to their Champions League campaign and even the return of Wayne Rooney didn't help matter as they could only manage a 0-0 draw with Rangers.

Alex Ferguson made ten changes to the side that had thrown away a 3-1 lead to Everton at the weekend as Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov didn't even make the bench while Ryan Giggs was left as a substitute.

Manchester United struggled to break through Rangers' defence as the Scottish side managed to stifle and control the Premiership side and control large portions of the match.

And while Rangers looked solid they were never really able to mount a serious attack on the Edwin van dar Sar's goal throughout the entire ninety minutes.

Javier Hernandez almost broke the deadline but sent a header wide and Rooney wasted an opportunity of trying to find him in the area, when he perhaps should have taken the shot on himself.

Darron Gibson was the only real threat on the pitch for United as he sent blasted two shots goal bound on either side of half time, both just missing the target.

There was a scare for United fans towards the end of an uninspiring first half when Rooney pulled up with what looked like an ankle problem but the striker seemed to run off the problem.

But the entire match was over shadowed by the horror injury suffered by Antonio Valencia in the second half as he dislocated and fractured his left ankle after a challenge from Kirk Broadfoot.

The winger need oxygen as he was carried off the Old Trafford pitch and it looks like he will be out for the rest of the season and will undergo surgery.

With no sign of a break through Ferguson brought on Michael Owen and Jonny Evans for Ji-Sung Park and Fabio with twenty minutes to go but neither made much of an impact and United limped off the pitch after a poor performance.

But there was one positive from the match and that was the return of Rio Ferdinand who played for the entire ninety minutes.

In other Champions League matches Barcelona showed their intent as they beat Panathinaikos 5-1 while defending champions Inter Milan could only manage a 2-2 draw with FC Twente.

Benfica saw off Hapoel Tel-Aviv 2-4 while Valencia had a good 4-0 win over Bursaspor.
