England striker Michael Owen looks set to have a race against time to be fit for this summer's World Cup after he had a second surgery on his broken foot.

The surgery was described as minor and Owen said he would play for his club, Newcastle, before the end of the season.

But with Sven-Goran Eriksson facing a deadline of May 15 to name his final squad for Germany, Owen's fitness will be preying on the mind of the England.

Owen, 26, broke his metatarsal bone in December, in a collision with Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, and had hoped to return April 9 but his comeback will now have to be pushed back again.

"The specialists say everything is fine but to speed the process they need to tighten the screw they inserted when I had the operation," Owen said.

"It is a simple process and should ensure that I'm back playing for Newcastle before the end of the season."

Owen cost Newcastle 17 million pounds in the summer, and is expected to play a big part in England's World Cup bid.
