Milan Jovanovic has spoken of his disappointment of Liverpool's humiliating defeat to Northampton in the Carling Cup last night.

Jovanovic got the Reds off the mark after just nine minutes as he scored his first goal in English football but that joy soon turned to despair when the Premier League side lost 4-2 on penalties.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo he said: "Catastrophe. I am so disappointed," said the Serbian. "We know this is not Liverpool. It is very bad.

"I am so surprised by the performance. I have not got enough experience of English football but I didn't expect this.

"Northampton played a really good game. We played a bad game, but this is football.

"I am so disappointed. We all are. We are sorry for the result but we have to move on now."

And Liverpool were lucky to make it to penalties as Ngog's equaliser came just four minutes from the end of extra time as he levelled the score at 2-2.

Despite Ngog's success in front of goal so far this season he was unable to make his spot kick count as he missed the opening penalty for Liverpool, Northampton's Steve Guinan doing the same.

But when Nathan Eccleston hit the crossbar Northampton were just one kick away from a famous win at Anfield. And it fell to Abdul Osman to put the ball past Brad Jones, and Osman was the coolest man on the pitch as he slotted home the winner.

It's been a poor start to the season for Liverpool as they languish in sixteenth place, two places from relegation on just five points from the first five games.

But they are back in action at the weekend with a home game with Sunderland.
