Manchester United came from behind to secure a win at Newcastle and extend their lead of the Premiership to seven points.

Edwin Van der Sar returned to the starting line up, after Ben Foster taking his place for the Carling Cup Final, to defend his record of going ,302 minutes without conceding a goal in the Premier League. Unfortunately for the keeper the record only lasted another nine minutes thanks to his own mistake.

He dropped a shot from Jonas Gutierrez awkwardly and the ball fell to Peter Lovenkrands who slotted home.

The goal gave Newcastle spirit and they continued to push for the first 30 minutes. Obafemi Martins almost could have doubled Newcastle's lead but went just wide.

Wayne Rooney was on hand to equalise for United just eleven minutes after Newcastle's early goal. John O'Shea found him in the area and he turned and hit the ball high past keeper Steve Harper.

Newcastle continued to threaten and Nemanja Vidic had to divert Ryan Taylor's cross away.

Vidic could have taken the lead  but headed Michael Carrick's corner off target.

The first half ended with some trouble when Steven Taylor cuffed Cristiano Ronaldo in a collision. Taylor was booked and then followed by Rio Ferdinand after the whistle.

Manchester United took the lead after the break when Ryan Taylor tied to chest Rooney's long ball back to Harper. Ji-Sung Park beat the keeper to it and Dimitar Berbatov slotted home on 56 minutes.

The Reds could have got a third but Harper saved Rooney's low drive on 70 minutes.

Newcastle had chances of their own though with both Lovenkrands and Martins testing Van der Sar but they could not find the equaliser.

The result leaves Newcastle hovering just above the bottom three but they will take heart from a strong display against the Champions.

Last night's other Premiership results:

Blackburn 0-0 Everton

Fulham 0-1 Hull

Man City 2-0 Aston Villa

Stoke 2-0  Bolton
