Liverpool kept up the fight for second place after Manchester United were crowned Champions on Saturday but their 2-0 win came at the expense of West Brom's Premiership status who were relegated after goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt.
After United's 0-0 draw with Arsenal the day before, the race for second place is now on for Liverpool and Chelsea.
West Brom's desperation saw them take control early on and could have taken the lead had it not been for a double save from keeper Pepe Reina.
Liverpool's Fernando Torres accidentally knocked the ball to Baggies's captain Jonathan Greening at the far post but his shot was saved and Reina blocked the rebound with his legs.
West Brom continued to push but Liverpool had now found their feet and Torres and Emiliano Insua both had shots blocked as they shot through a busy defence. Liverpool opened the scoring just before the half hour mark..
Gerrard robbed Shelton Martis of the ball, ran on goal and sent his shot over keeper Dean Kiely, getting his 24th of the season. Torres nearly headed home a second from a Gerrard cross but Kiely tipped it over.
After the break West Brom were denied a penalty when Marc-Antoine Fortune fell under a tackle by Leiva Lucas.
Liverpool doubled their lead after 63 minutes when Kuyt sent in a low shot from the edge of the box.
West Brom didn't give up though, stretching the defence. Jamie Carragher had to lunge to divert Fortune's shot over but he had another go but sent his header over.
The late surge from the Baggies led to an argument between Carragher and fellow defender Alvaro Arbeloa with the teammates pushing each other but Carragher later explained it was over the desire to keep a clean sheet.
The score line stayed the same seeing the Reds stay second with 83 points, their highest amount since 1988.

Bolton 1-1 Hull
Everton 3-1 West Ham
