Steven Gerrard believes that Liverpool are going in the right direction, despite losing 2-1 to Manchester United at the weekend.

Liverpool came from 2-0 down to level the score 2-2 before Dimitar Berbatov scored his third of the afternoon just seven minutes from time.

And despite taking just five points from their first five games of the new season Gerrard claims that progress is being made under new manager Roy Hodgson.

Speaking to The Sun he said: It is going to take time before the new manager gets his feet in the door and gets his ideas over

"We are improving and the performance yesterday was very good. If we play like that most weeks we will beat most teams in the league.

"We just came up against a man in form who was the difference."

It was a scrappy match in the first forty five minutes but Liverpool were lucky to go in at half time just 1-0 behind as Berbatov struck in the forty second minute to give United the lead.

They doubled their lead just before the hour mark but it was a better performance from Liverpool in the second half as Gerrard got them back in the match after a penalty in the sixty fourth minute.

It was the captain who struck again six minutes later to pull his team level 2-2. And Gerrard admits that it was Liverpool's fighting spirit in the second half that impressed him the most.

When you come to Old Trafford it is important to keep the ball away from United or they will control the game and score every time they go forward.

"We kept the ball away from them and I thought we passed it really well. Of course we had to be edgy in the first half because we were away from home.

"I thought second half we were much more positive and played some terrific stuff but you get nothing for that.

"When you go to places like that you have to create chances from your possession and score goals. We scored two but it was not enough."

Liverpool are back in action tomorrow night when they face Northampton in the Carling Cup.
