Steven Gerrard has hit back at the critics after England's 2-1 win over Hungary.

It was the Liverpool star who got England out of trouble last night with two stunning goals in four minutes after England fell behind in the second half.

A mistake from Tottenham's Michael Dawson saw a questionable own goal go the way of Phil Jagielka as another poor goal line decision went against England.

And while Gerrard stated earlier this week that England deserved the boos that would come their way last night but hit out at claims that the players don't care.

Speaking to the BBC the England captain said: "The players have had a lot of criticism, a lot of it really fair and some of it unfair.

"From my reaction for the first goal, you can see how much it means to me and the players to be part of this group.

"A lot of criticism had been directed at us saying that we don't care and it doesn't mean anything for us to play for England. Unfair criticism hurts as a player because there's no need for it."

Ashley Cole, John Terry and Frank Lampard came under fire from fans at the beginning of the match and Wayne Rooney was booed as he was substituted in the second half.

While it was by no means a vintage performance from England last night it was a chance for Capello to bring in some younger talent as the side prepare for the European qualifying campaign.
