The race for the Premier League title will go down tot he last match of the season as Manchester United remain just a single point behind Chelsea with just one match to go.
Frank Lampard was Chelsea's hero at the weekend as he scored the second goal in a 2-0 victory over a lack-lustre Liverpool to move clear at the top of the table and put all of the pressure back on Manchester United.
It was a slow start at Anfield for Chelsea but a mistake by Steven Gerrard gifted Didier Drogba a goal scoring opportunity in the thirty third minutes.
And it was a chance that he didn't waste as he found the back of the net to give the visitors the edge.
There was no more resistance from Liverpool, still disappointed about the Europa Cup exit on Thursday, as Chelsea sauntered to victory.
Lampard in the fifty fourth minute to secure the victory and move clear of United.
The Manchester side had to sit and watch Chelsea put the pressure back on them earlier in the day but they managed to find a way past Sunderland's defence.
Only a victory would do for Ferguson's men and the two sides were locked together for almost half an hour.
And it was Nani to the rescue as he blasted the ball into the back of the net on the twenty eighth minute to give United a slender lead.
But Sunderland continued to press forward and had a handful of chances to equalise and spoil United's title dreams.
But Manchester United held strong and must win next weekend if they have any hope of lifting the title.
Despite having that two point advantage going into the final game Lampard told the BBC that the title race is not yet over.
"Obviously Manchester United have a tough game but we'll never go that far, we have a big game next week.
"But we knew the Liverpool game was huge for us. We knew if we had dropped points we would have given the momentum to United."
Chelsea will face Wigan next Sunday while United face Stoke.
