Cattermole is in the England Under-21.

Wigan have made a revised bid for Lee Cattermole.

The Latics are believed to have offered around £3.5m for the 20-year-old England Under-21 international after failing with an initial approach.

In light of the fresh bid, Boro manager Gareth Southgate withdrew Cattermole from Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Celtic.

Southgate revealed last week that the club had received a tentative bid for Cattermole and has admitted he will need to sell before he can buy again.

Cattermole is a product of Middlesbrough's youth academy and has made 69 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

As a teenager he became established in the first-team squad under former manager Steve McClaren but has struggled to stay in the team under predecessor Southgate.

Wigan have been relatively busy in the transfer market recently, signing midfielder Olivier Kapo for £3.5m from Birmingham City, Egypt striker Amr Zaki on a one-year loan deal from Zamalek and Dutch winger Daniel de Ridder on a free deal.
