Newcastle have lodged an appeal against the red card which threatens to rule Vurnon Anita out of their next three games.
Manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that the club is contesting referee Tim Robinson's decision to dismiss the midfielder turned full-back for an 87th-minute foul on substitute Ivan Cavaleiro during Saturday's 2-0 Sky Bet Championship defeat by Wolves.
Benitez said: "It wasn't with the studs, it was a little bit lateral. He didn't touch the player, but in football sometimes you have a point of view and maybe it's different to the reality."
The club will learn its fate before kick-off in Tuesday night's EFL third-round tie against the same opposition at St James' Park.
However, if the appeal is unsuccessful, Anita will miss the Wolves game and the league fixtures against Aston Villa and Norwich, who were relegated from the Premier League along with the Magpies at the end of last season.
