Jenson Button has called the Sunday's Hungarian grand Pix the lowest point of McLaren's season so far.

After struggling in qualifying Button has to start the race back in eleventh but did finish eighth. It wasn't such good news for his team mate Lewis Hamilton as he was force to retire from the race.

Speaking to the BBC the defending champion said: "It's the toughest day we've had this year.

"But this McLaren team has had some dark days in the past and bounced back from those, so I'm pretty confident."

The Red Bull team took first and third while a rejuvenated Ferrari side took second and fourth and Mclaren never looked like threatening for the lead.

And during the summer break, they don't race now until the end of August in Belgium, Button revealed that McLaren will be working on the car.

"We'll be doing all we can to make sure the car works [at the next race] in Spa. And I'm pretty sure it will happen.

"In qualifying I really struggled to get a balance, didn't get into the top 10 - and that made it difficult. I didn't have the pace in the race. I just didn't have any grip, locking front, locking rears.

"It's mentally draining fighting for position, but it's pretty crazy how close the championship is at the moment.

"The Red Bulls are on top now, and in the last couple of races they've had such a performance advantage. They have jumped ahead of us, and we have to find our pace."

Sunday's race winner Mark Webber has now overtaken Hamilton at the top of the rankings on 161 points, the Briton has slipped to second just four points behind on 157.

Sebastian Vettel is just six points behind on 151 while Button has now slipped fourth in the race for the title on 147 points.
