Jenson Button got his 2012 season off with a bang as he won the Australian Grand Prix.

Button, who is looking to win a second world title three years after his first, lead from the first corner to the flag in was as an assured and confident drive from the Brit.

McLaren had looked sharp all weekend and they had locked out the front row of the grid as Lewis Hamilton grabbed poll and Button was second.

But it was Button who made the quicker start and he had overtook Lewis at the first corner before pulling away from the field.

It was a McLaren one-two for a vast majority of the race before a safety car allowed Sebastian Vettel to go into the pits and exit in front of Hamilton.

The safety car cur Button's lead but at the re-start he sped away from Vettel and the rest of the pack.

Vettel and Hamilton were left to battle it out for second and third, with the defending champion coming out on top as he took second place.

There was only a two second gap between Button & Vettel but the early part of the race showed the speed that the McLaren car had and if there hadn't been that safety car Button would have maintained that sizeable lead.

Speaking to the BBC after the race Button said: "As a team it really shows how important the winter is.

"We had a strong winter and qualifying really shows that. It's nice to come away with a win in the first race of the season. Every win means a lot to you."

Lewis Hamilton had to settle for third in a race were things just didn't go his way.

Mark Webber finished fourth while Fernando Alonso made up for a poor qualifying, he started twelfth, to finish fifth.

Kamui Kobayashi was sixth while Kimi Raikkonen picked up points in seventh in his first race back after a two year absence.
