Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel got back to winning ways yesterday as he notched up his first victory of the 2012 season at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The defending champion has not had the best start to the season who he and Red Bull looked to have turned things around on Saturday when he snatch pole from McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

But Vettel pulled away from the chasing pack at the beginning of the race and it was only Kimi Raikkonen who put him under any sort of pressure.

In just his fourth race since his return to F1 Raikkonen was back on the podium as he had to settle for second, despite trying to track Vettel down.

It was a great day for Lotus as Romain Grosjean was also on the podium as he finished third.

Speaking to the BBC after the race Vettel said: "It was an incredible race. We had a very good start, which was crucial.

"I was able to pull away from the pack which turned out to be a good advantage because we always had to go on used tyres.

"Kimi was quick, and so was Romain. It was a difficult race. Once he was close, I thought he would have more than one shot, but in the end I was able to pull out of a gap."

But it was a bad day at the office for McLaren as another bad pit-stop cost Lewis Hamilton, who finished eighth while Jenson Button was forced to retire two laps from the end of the race.

And Paul di Resta's two stop strategy worked out well for him as he managed to finish sixth in what has been a difficult time n Bahrain for Force India.

With four races of the season completed it' Vettel who leads the standings on fifty three points, just four point ahead of Hamilton.

Webber is in third on forty eight as he notched up his fourth consecutive fourth spot finish on Sunday.
