Alberto Contador is protesting his innocence after failing a drugs test.

The Spaniard tested positive for clenbuterol, a fat burning and muscle building during this year's Tour de France, which he won for the third time in his career earlier this summer.

Both his A and B samples tested positive for the drug and the cyclist believes that contaminated food is the reason for the failed test.

Contador was made aware of the failed test on 24th August and has been banned from racing but in a statement he claimed it was a genuine mistake.

Speaking at a news conference Pinto the three time Tour de France champion said: "The UCI itself affirmed in front of me that it was a case of food contamination.

"This is a genuine mistake. I think it will be resolved in a clear way, with the truth up front," he said but added that the UCI "understands that is a special case, which has to be examined".

"I've spent a month and half keeping this inside, without sleeping. My family didn't find out until last night.

"This is a real error. The system is very questionable and it has to be changed. I cannot tolerate the idea of a possible sanction."

Contador battled with fellow rider Andy Schleck for the right to e crowned Tour de France champion in what was an enthralling three weeks racing.

The Spaniard also won the title in 2007 and 2009 and is widely regarded as the best of his generation and one of the greatest of all time.

But if the failed test is upheld Contador could be banned from the sport for two years and stripped of his 2010 Tour de France title.
