With the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award ceremony on Sunday, Chris Mayer takes a look at each nominee over the coming week. Today, we focus on heptathlete Jessica Ennis.
It's been another non-stop 12 months for Great Britain's golden girl of athletics.
Ennis has been dominant in the Heptathlon event once again, after World Championship Gold in Berlin this previous year, proving why she's considered one of the best track and field athletes in the world.
Her year couldn't have got off to a better start either as she set a new British indoor 60m hurdle record in Glasgow of 7.95 seconds, edging Lolo Jones by two hundredths of a second. She then beat her best in the High Jump of 1.94 metres.
March saw her compete in the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, where she looked at adding a Pentathlon Gold to her ever-expanding medal collection. Not only did she storm to gold but she set a new record of 4,937. She had personal bests in the Long Jump and 800m events, beating all the medallists from the previous Olympics in Bejing, laying down a marker to any challenger and a personal milestone in her glittering career.
However, the best was yet to come. In the IAAF European Championships, Ennis continued to demonstrate her dominance in almost ever event. The humidity in Barcelona wasn't enough to deter her from winning. Ennis led from start to finishing 1st in the 100m, high jump, 200m and 800m over the two day event.
Strong finishes in her weaker events, such as the shotput (6th) and long jump (4th) clearly showed the rest of the world that Ennis was at the top of her game, finishing the event on 6,823 points, smashing the previous European record.
Former Olympic sprinter Michael Johnson has already said she will be the face of the London Olympics, and there appears to be no doubts that Ennis is the heptathlete of her generation. It's a good thing she's on a well earned break from competition before concentrating next year on further establishing herself as the athlete to watch at the Olympics.
Odds of winning - 25/1
Verdict - Outsider. As great as her achievements have been this year, 2009 was her year.
