When the best BMX riders fight for the World Championship Gold in the Danish capital at the end of July there will be a serious adrenaline rush. The World Championships are a unique opportunity to get a closer look at the sport and all its international stars before the Olympics in London 2012.
Among the riders you will see the two British top BMX riders Liam Phillips and Shanaze Reade who will do their very best to bring the gold medals back to the UK.
During the World Championships it will furthermore be possible to collect important qualification points for the Olympics in London in 2012 where BMX will be on the program for the second time ever.
World class BMX tracks in Copenhagen
For the past three years Copenhagen has hosted the World Cup BMX Supercross but it’s the first time ever Denmark hosts the BMX World Championships.
The Copenhageners can pride themselves of having one of the best and most modern BMX tracks in the world - a completely new track with room for 7500 spectators situated only a quarter from the central city square by bike.
Word of the ’state of the art’ Copenhagen track has run like wildfire through the BMX community and already top BMX riders from all over the world are testing the tracks.
Riders from countries like Germany, Australia, Japan, Netherlands, UK, Hong Kong, Sweden, Italy, Ecuador and South Africa have been seen practicing on the tracks and they confirm that it’s totally ready for the World Championship July 27.-31st.
To the Worlds for a dime
The BMX World Championships are kicked off on 26 July with a big public festival on the Copenhagen city square. There you will find well known DJ’s and BMX freestylers who will do their very best to put the audience in the right world championship mood. The day after the actual races will start on the wild tracks.
City of the BMX bikes
Copenhagen has been selected to be the first ’Bike City’ (2007-2011) in the world by The International Cycling Union. That of course includes the BMX bikes which in recent years have had an increasing growth in the whole world.
In Copenhagen also related sports so as parcour, roller skates, skating, street art, surfing and hip hop are big in Copenhagen, where a vast underground street culture is sizzling in the skater parcs and abandoned industrial areas of the city.
Other famous Copenhagen events related to this culture are the Roskilde Festival, one of Europe’s biggest music, and the Trailerpark Festival, a four-day Copenhagen-based music and arts festival staged at the same time as the UCI BMX Worlds.
