Dai Greene and Rhys Williams made it a British one-two in the 400m hurdles last night in Barcelona.
Greene came into the championships as the fastest I Europe so far this season and he lived up to everyone’s expectations as he pulled away from the field in the home straight.
And while Williams believed he could get the better of his straining partner he just couldn’t live with Greene’s pace in the final stage of the race but bagged a great silver medal.
Greene stopped the clock at 48.12 seconds to take gold while Williams produced a personal best to 48.96 to take the silver.
With his time Greene moves up to second on the British all time list.
Speaking after the race Greene told the BBC: "It felt pressurised being the favourite tonight but the pressure helped me to focus and go faster.
"I didn't have any other objective than to win the gold medal and I'm very pleased to have secured a personal best at the same time."
There was also medal success for Michal Rimmer as he claimed a silver medal in the 800m; however he was disappointed on missing out on gold.
The gold went to Marcin Lewandowski, who was the fastest on paper just ahead of Rimmer, who made a charge for the line in the home straight.
It was a well judged race by Rimmer who missed out on gold by just one-tenth of a second as he clocked a time of 47.08 for silver while Lewandowski took gold in a time of 47.07.
