Dai Greene was pushed to 400m hurdles gold as he added to his European crown that he claimed earlier in the summer.

The Welshman was the hot favourite coming into the Commonwealth Games and had looked strong in the earlier rounds.

And he did not disappoint as he won Wales’ first gold medal on the track at the 2010 Games but he was pushed all the way to the line by defending champion Louis van Zyl of South Africa.

Greene was in contention as he came into the 100m straight but was unable to pull away from van Zyl, who put in the best race of the year to claim silver.

But Greene didn’t panic under pressure and held him off to clock a time of 48.52 seconds and take his second gold of the year.

Van Zyl crossed the line in 48.63 seconds while Rhys Williams came from way down the field with 100m to go to claim bronze.

It was a second medal for Welshman Rhys as he took silver behind Green at the European Championships in Barcelona.

Speaking to the BBC after the race Green said:    "I knew he (Van Zyl) was the guy to watch out for but I always felt I had an extra gear to switch to it when I wanted to and I did in the home straight.

"I'm very pleased. The season couldn't have gone any better. I won the UK trials, the Europeans and now the Commonwealths.

“There's nothing else I could possibly have won. It all bodes well for next year and the Worlds, and then 2012."
