Hannah England produced a battling final 100m to bag a silver medal over 1500m in one of the most exciting finals of the world championships so far.

Injury and misfortune has plagued England in recent years and Daegu 2011 is the first major champs for the distance runner.

She may have made the final as a fastest loser but she wasn't prepared to make up the numbers as she stayed on the back of the leading pack in the opening laps.

With 200m to go and there were still a handful of athletes in with a chance of claiming a medal - England being one of them.

And just as she did in her semi-final she ran wide in the home straight to get ahead of those ahead of her as she stormed through the 50m to claim silver behind Jenny Simpson from the USA.

Speaking to the BBC after the race England said: "I knew some of the race scenarios would suit me, and I was lucky to get one that did - but it's totally different to do it.

"I just tried to be insular and clinical and finish as fast as I could. I wasn't tying up, and perhaps if I hadn't had to go so wide I might have won - but Jenny [Simpson] had to go wide too."

Jenny Meadows came through her 800m heat comfortably as she won her race. Marilyn Okoro also came through her heat while Emma Jackson was a fastest loser.

There was more good news for Team GB's women as Goldie Sayers qualified for the javelin final with her second throw.

Sayers has been in fine form in recent weeks after coming back from an injury and a throw of 62.19m secured her spot in the final.
