Jeremy Wariner will not be competing at the world championships in Daegu after picking up a foot injury.
The former 400m world and Olympic champion has bee unable to recreate the form of previous years this season in what has been an under par year in general in this event.
But Wariner tore a ligament in the second toe of his left foot whilst training last month which has ended his hopes of reclaiming the world title.
And while he is disappointed to miss out Wariner said he was working to be fit and ready for London 2012.
A statement on www.usatf.org read: I am disappointed that I will not be able to try to regain the world title in the 400 meters in Daegu.
"Right now my focus is to get healthy, prepare for the 2012 season and try for my second Olympic gold medal in the 400. I wish my team-mates the best in Daegu."
It was silver for Wariner in Berlin two years ago - behind his compatriot LaShawn Merritt - after taking gold in both 2005 and 2007.
