John Higgins believes that the troubles that he has faced over the last twelve months have made him a stronger person and player.
The four time world title winner was suspended for six months after a film emerged of him and his former manager allegedly accepting a bribe.
While those charges were dropped he was suspended for brings the game into disrepute. Higgins returned to action back in November - and has since reclaimed the world number one spot.
Higgins has also recently lost his father to cancer but the Scot believes that all this has just made him more determined.
Speaking to BBC Scotland he said: "I think as a person I'm definitely stronger for what I've been through.
"It's given me a little more appetite or determination. I'm just trying to do my best."
This weekend sees Higgins begin his quest for a fifth world title as the world championships get underway at the Crucible in Sheffield.
And while the Scot has plenty of experience at the biggest tournament on the snooker calendar he reveals that there are always some nerves.
"I think you're always nervous before you go down to the Crucible. You don't know how you're going to react or play. I've just got to go down and do my best.
"It's a wide open tournament, everyone will fancy their chances and I'm no different. I feel, if I play well, I could do well in the tournament."
Higgins begins his title quest on Wednesday against Stephen Lee - he potentially could face either Ricky Walden or Rory McLeod in the second round.
