Liam Tancock took inspiration from Fran Halsall's gold winning performance as he won the 50m backstroke from lane seven.
Tancock is the world champion over this distance but looked to be cruising in the semi final, which is why he found himself in an outside lane.
But not being in the middle of the action didn't seen to bother Tancock as he led from the off before powering to the win in 24.62 seconds.
Hayden Stoeckel of Australia finished second while his compatriot Ashley Delaney wrapped up the medal places in third.
Speaking to BBC Sport after the race Tancock said: "It's a great start to the meet for us, a couple of golds.
"It felt pretty good but it didn't feel amazing. I gave it my best, though, and stroked on through to the win."
And The Flower of Scotland rang out around the arena as Robbie Renwick got Scotland's first gold medal of the Games in the 200m freestyle.
Renwick was down in seventh at one point in the race but made up huge ground in the second 100m. Scot David Carry and Ross Davenport of England, who was defending champion, were in contention for medals most of the race.
But Renwick powered back to snatch the gold medal in the final meters clocking a time of 1:47.88 while Kenrick Monk and Thomas Fraser-Holmes took silver and bronze.
Davenport finished in fifth while Carry came in eighth.
In the 100m breaststroke England's Daniel Sliwinski was the eighth fastest qualifier for the final while Scotland's Michael Jamieson and Kris Gilchrist also made the final.
