Mark Lewis Francis produced a storming final 100m in the men's 4x100 to take the gold for England in dramatic fashion.
The sprinter had already picked up a silver in the 100m competition earlier in the week and he was once again on the anchor leg to bring the baton home for England.
And just as he did in Athens in 2004, which saw Great Britain become Olympic Champions, Lewis Francis tore down the home straight - this time he was not holding off the competition but chasing it as he tracked down the Jamaican to pip him just before the line.
Ryan Scott got the English side underway and while it wasn't the smoothest handover to 200m champion Leon Baptiste it was at least safe.
Baptiste was clearly suffering from his exploits of the last couple of days, he admitted after the race that he was disappointed with his run, but it was a good handover to Marlon Devonish.
It was a good bend from the veteran but by the time he handed the baton over to Lewis Francis there were still plenty of teams in contention for medals while it looked like Jamaica was away and gone.
But Lewis Francis put his foot on the gas to win by just 0.04 seconds as he made up for the European Championship disappointment.
Speaking to the BBC after the race Lewis Francis said: "That's what it's all about. Two years of hard work getting back on the track and I'm over the moon right about now.
But there was disappointment for Andy Baddeley and Tom Lancashire in the 1500m as they could only finish sixth and eighth, Silas Kiplagat from Kenya took the gold.
