Mo Farah brought the indoor meet in Birmingham to a spectacular end on Saturday as he smashed the  British 5000m record.

With some help from his new training partner Galen Rupp the European and Commonwealth time stopped the clock at 13 minutes 10.60 seconds - which was also a best time in Europe.

Farah had announced that, despite an excellent 2010, he would be switching coach and training in America as he prepares for this summer's World Championships and the 2012 Olympics.

Speaking to the BBC after the race Farah said: The aim was to come here and run good and get ready for the Euro indoors which is not too far away, so I'm delighted with that.

"It was awesome. I had a big help from [Rupp]. I'm now looking forward to Paris and sharpening up a bit."

But Farah was not the only British athlete that made the headlines as Phillips Idowu won the triple jump, in what was his first competition of 2011.

He saved his best jump until the final round as he leapt to 17.57m to see rival Christian Olsson finish in second.

Jenny Meadows also looked in fine form as she cruised to victory in the 800m. Nigel Levine also notched up a fine victory in the 400m as he raced to a personal best.

But it wasn't all good news as Mark Lewis Francis pulled up in the 100m heat with a groin muscle injury.

Fellow sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey's European Indoor Championships also hang in the balance as is suffering from a torn hamstring.

Steve Lewis also picked up an injury when he pole vault snapped during a jump. The British number one appeared to fall awkwardly and suffered a fractured thumb.
