Buffalo Bills coach Mike Mularkey has resigned following a losing season which saw the team miss the play-offs for the six years on the run.
At the end of the regular season Mularkey said he would stay to see out the remaining two years he had on his contract.
But after presiding over 14 wins and 18 losses during two seasons Mularkey had a change of heart and handed in his resignation.
Bills owner Ralph Wilson was reported as saying he was completely surprised by the statement, but as the decision had been made start the process of appointing a new head coach.
