The Indianapolis Colts became the first club in NFL history to start consecutive seasons 9-0 after earning a tight 17-16 victory against the Buffalo Bills.
It could have been so different if Buffalo's Rian Lindell had completed a 40-yard field-goal with six seconds left in the fourth quarter, with the Colts running the clock down they now remain the only unbeaten team in the NFL.
Quarterback Peyton Manning completed 27 passes for 236 yards, including a touchdown to Reggie Wayne but it was not an easy ride as the Bills ran them to the wire with Lindell kicking three field goals and cornerback Terrence McGee running in a touchdown.
Elsewhere, Chicago (8-1) rallied from a 10-point first-half deficit scoring 28 second-half points to end the Giants' five-game winning streak.
LaDainian Tomlinson ran for 104 yards and four touchdowns, while Philip Rivers threw for three more as San Diego beat Cincinnati.
Steve McNair threw three touchdown passes to lead the Baltimore Ravens to victory over Tennessee.
Roethlisberger threw three touchdown passes and Willie Parker converted twice Pittsburgh saw off New Orleans to keep their slim post-season hopes alive, while Seattle's win over St Louis which saw them take control of the NFC West Division.
