Despite Andy Murray's impressive run to the final of the US Open former world number one and defending champion was one match too far for the Scot as Roger Federer powered to the title.

A little bit of history was made at Flushing Meadows last night as the Swiss player became the first player ever to win five consecutive titles as two separate Grand Slam tournament, the other being Wimbledon between 2002-2007.

While Federer went into the match a strong favourite after his impressive display against Novak Djokovic on Friday Andy Murray was riding on the high of beating the world number one Rafael Nadal for the first time on Sunday.

But his performance to see off the world number one and in form player of the year clearly took it's toll on Murray, who walked onto court the new world number four as Federer made a strong start.

The defending champion took the first set 6-2 showing the form of Federer of old as Murray has no answer eventually losing his serve in game five of the first set.

Federer didn't let up in the second set as he broke again to storm to a 2-0 and it looked like a quick defeat was on the cards. But Murray battled back as he tried to keep his dream of becoming the first British man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Fred Perry in 1936 but Federer finally took the set 7-5.

Federer went into cruise control and raced to a 5-0 lead in the third set as Murray's serve, which had served him so well against Nadal, deserted him.
