Weald Electric Vehicle Technology is claiming a new UK electric motorcycle drag-racing record with their custom built 'Drag Racer' project.
The prototype motorcycle hit 96.53mph in just 14.12 seconds over Santa Pod’s ¼ mile dragstrip at the Alternative Energy Racing event on May 14th 2011.
The bike is based on a Yamaha XJ600, but it has been extensively modified, with all of the internal combustion elements dumped in favour of twin Angni motors and Lithium Ion batteries.
Electric drag racing is a rapidly growing sport in both the USA where it originated and in the UK, where Santa Pod’s Alternative Energy Racing event has run for four consecutive years with the latest event attracting more electric entrants than ever.
The UK electric car drag racing record also fell earlier in the year, when Sam Young took his electric VW Beetle to an astonishing 9.51 second pass at the Easter Thuderball event in April 2011.
Weald’s bike was ridden by Rob Moon, but Rob still has some way to go before he can claim the world record, which was set by Larry McBride in the USA, who hit 177mph in just 7.469 seconds over the standing ¼ mile.
