Tennis stars can be temperamental at the best of times, ( what ! You cannot be serious, we hear one J. McEnroe screaming into his courtside microphone), but Argentinian David Nalbandian took it one kick too far in the final at Queens.
One set up but having just lost a crucial point to go 3-4 down in the second he took his anger out on the advertising board around the line-judge. What he forgot though in his moment of madness was the fact that the line-judge was sat immediately behind aforementioned board and who was then pole-axed with a bloodied shin.
AP rules clearly state instant disqualification for such bad-boy behaviour and Croatian Marin Cilic was awarded the silverware in front of a bemused and booing packed house.
The Argy Bargy hasn’t stopped there though and it’s now reported that police are investigating an assault charge against the disgruntled player. Bring on Wimbledon !
In the US Golf Open Tiger’s charge faded on the final day, and we had our 15th different major winner in a row and the ninth straight first-time winner in 26 year-old American Webb Simpson. Jim Furyk’s challenge imploded badly from the 16th and Lee Westwood was in with a shout of claiming his first major but then found himself stuck up a pine tree. Funny ol’ game golf.
England’s Ian Bell got the go ahead to bat in Saturday’s ODI after literally taking one on the chin in the nets and completely dominated in his 117- ball knock of 126 out of a 280-6 total. The West Insies‘s Dwayne Smith replied with a spirited 56 but the spoils went to the home side in a rain-affected Duckworth-Lewis determined result.
And Wales, Ireland and England all failed to beat Southern Hemisphere rugby union oppo over the week-end, losing to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa respectively. Wales looked set to beat the Wallabies in Australia for the first time since 1969 before a dramatic late penalty, while in the Irish game with the scores locked at 19-19 after 79 minutes, Dan Carter's drop goal scraped over to give the world champions a narrow victory.
After an awesome first half from South Africa England staged a brilliant second half comeback led by Ben Youngs who scored two tries in ten minutes but who will now miss the rest of the tour with a shoulder injury. The comeback was not enough though and the home side ran out worthy 36-27 winners clinching the three Test series in the process.
Seems like all three home nation sides now have something to prove in the final Tests this week-end
