Steve Davis' Crucible Dream Ended

Steve Davis' fairytale run at this year's snooker World Championships came to an end yesterday as he was beaten by Australian Neil Robertson.

Despite his unexpected win over John Higgins at the weekend 'the nugget' was unable to reproduce that kind of form against Robertson.

On Tuesday night it looked like the Aussie was going to take the victory with a session to spare but Davis took the final two frames to make sure he returned to the Crucible again yesterday morning.

Trailing 12-4 Davis got another great reception from the Crucible crowd as the 2010 tournament is his thirtieth year in Sheffield.

And it seemed that Davis was plotting a comeback as a break of fifty nine saw him cut the deficit to just seven frames.

And he was on the board again in the second frame of the morning with a twenty seven point lead over Robertson.

But the world number nine was not to be denied and a break of 107 saw Davis' Crucible dream come to an end, at least for another year.

Speaking after the match to the BBC Robertson said: "I was a little bit disappointed I didn't wrap it up last night. But all credit to Steve for taking it to the extra session.

"I was very relieved to get through because I haven't played very well at all. I'm over the moon to get to the semis considering the way I've played so I'll have to improve a lot to get to the final."

Robertson will now play Ali Carter, who saw off Shaun Murphy, for a place in the final.
