Tyson Gay defied the condition in Crystal Palace last night as he clocked the fastest 100m time of 2010 at 9.78 seconds.

With both Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell not at the meet because of injury it was a one man show as the American ran against the clock in a chilly night in London.

The conditions were not ideal for fast times as it was wet and cold but Gay put down another marker to the rest of the big named sprinters as he pulled away from the field with ease to post another sub ten clocking.

Gay got a superb start and was already a metre up on the field after just ten meters and he continued to pull away from the rest of the field.

Although there was a bit of a grimace from the former world champion as he crossed the line, the groin problem continuing to be an issue, Gay looked to be in great form as the season draws to a close.

Promising youngster Yohan Blake was the best of the rest as he notched up a personal best of 9.89 and Richard Thompson, who is an Olympic silver medallist, had to settle for third.

It was the first competition for many of Great Britain’s athletes who had enjoyed European success in Barcelona just a couple of weeks ago as they performed in front of a home crowd.

Double European champion Mo Farah was back in action  over 5000m as he faced a tough field which included Bernard Lagat, European silver medallist Chris Thompson was also on the start line.

But it was to be a race too far for Farah as he finished second behind Lagat as the Briton clocked a time of 7:40.75. And while Thompson finished down in sixth he achieved a personal best of 7:43.34.

Phillips Idowu was also in action in the triple jump last night but he could only manage 16.54m to finish in sixth.

Christian Olsson was the victor with a jump of 17.41m while the European silver medallist Teddy Tamgho was second.

But it was a good performance for Dai Greene, who won gold over 400m hurdles in Barcelona, as he lined up in a tough field.

Greene finished third behind Bershawn Jackson, who put in another great performance over the barriers, and Javier Culson.
