Tyson Gay has revealed that he is ready to face double Olympic Champion Usain Bolt at this summer's world championships.
The American's world 100m and 200m titles, which he won in Osaka two years ago, are under threat after Bolt dominant performance in Beijing last year which saw him do the sprint double.
And despite a confident start to the season by the Jamaican defending champion Gay believes that he can challenge Bolt and defend his title.
The American ran a wind assisted time of 9.75 second 100m in the first round of the USATF Championships in Eugene at the end of last week as he lay down the gauntlet for Bolt.
Gay receives an automatic wild card to run at the World Championships in Berlin in August as the defending champion so will not feature in any more runs at the trials.
In an interview with morethanthegames after his run Gay said: "I'm just trying to stay healthy and get ready for the World Championships. I'm looking forward to a fast race there.
"You have got to run 9.59 to beat Usain, that's how I look at it, I have the mechanics. I have the coaching.
"I've ran a wind-aided 9.7 and he has ran a wind-aided 9.7. We are both showing great fitness, but to be honest my race here was horrible.
"I knew it was wind aided, so it wasn't going to get in the books. At the same time I got to know that I am able to turn over that fast. I'll be able to do that when I execute. I had the right rhythm, but I didn't feel that in the race."
