Usain Bolt set the Olympic stadium in Berlin a light last night as he won the 100m world title in a new world record.
The Jamaican superstar broke his own world record as he stormed to gold in just 9.58 seconds repeating the efforts we saw from the twenty two year old just twelve months ago in Beijing.
The defending world champion Tyson Gay had to run an American record and personal best of 9.71 to claim a silver medal.
And there was more Jamaican success as Asafa Powell ran 9.84 to finish third.
The top five runners all clocked sun ten second times while Dwain Chambers, the only European in the final, ran ten seconds dead in his first high level final since 2003.
The 100m was being built as a duel between the double Olympic champion Bolt against the double world champion Gay, the pair hadn't faced each other all season.
And while Bolt has been grabbing all the headlines in recent weeks it was the American that had the fastest time of the year so far.
But from the first round it looked like it was going to be a one man show as Bolt eased through the rounds with minimum effort.
And while Gay was also progressing it seemed unlikely that he would get close to the Jamaican. Gay has also been suffering with a groin injury.
While all eyes were on him Bolt seemed unfazed by the pressure and expectation that was building up around him as he cruised to victory, winning the race with forty metres to go.
Speaking to the BBC after the race he said: "I was ready, I was feeling good after the semi-finals."
"I knew it was going to be a great race and I came out and executed it. It's a great time. I did well and I feel good in myself."
He will return to the track later this week to compete in the 200m.
