Usain Bolt continues stamp his authority on the sprints as he cruised through the opening heats of the 200m.

The Jamaican won the 100m on Sunday night in a new world record is trying to complete the sprint double.

Despite claiming that he was tired  the lightning Bolt didn't show any signs of fatigue as he took his place on the start line.

However the hopes of a Bolt and Tyson Gay rematch were dashed as the defending champion Gay pulled out of the competition.

Gay had been nursing a groin strain throughout the 100m competition, despite finishing second in a new American record. It's not yet clear if he will participate in the relay.

British sprinter, who ran in his first major final since 2003, also pulled out of the 200m with a calf strain.

Britain's only representative this morning in the heats was veteran sprinter Marlon Devonish. At the age of thirty three Devonish was in cruise control as he won his heat in 20.92.

The second round will take place tonight.

This morning also saw the men's 400m get underway and the rivalry between American's Jeremy Wariner and LaShawn Merritt once again ignited.

Wariner is the defending champion, going for his third consecutive world title, but he lost his Olympic crown to Merritt in Beijing last year.

Both progress with ease in the heats this morning. But there was also good news for the Brits as Martin Rooney, Robert Tobin and Michael Bingham all made it through.
