Usain Bolt took his third gold medal of the Berlin World Championship as the Jamaican 4x100m team stormed home to take the title.
The Olympic champions were the pre-race favourites and the team of Steve Mullings, Michael Frater, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell looked unstoppable as they crossed the line in 37.31 seconds.
Trinidad and Tobago took silver with Great Britain, who were Olympic Champions back in 2004, picked up a bronze medal. The Americans didn’t take place in the final after being disqualified in the qualifying round
But the 2009 world Championships well and truly belong to Usain Bolt who has dominated proceeding over the past week as well as delivering some truly historic performances, including two almost impossible world records.
And more success for Jamaican sprinting came earlier in the evening as the women’s 4x100m also brought home a gold medal.
There was more relay misery for America as Muna Lee pulled up with a hamstring injury, they were the defending champions.
It was a mixed evening for team GB as both the men’s and women’s 4x100m teams qualified for the final while the women’s 4x100 finished sixth in the final, they finished fourth two years ago.
But there was disappointment in the long jump as Greg Rutherford failed to repeat his qualifying success, which saw him break the British record, as he only managed to finish fifth.
The gold medal went to Dwight Phillips while second Brit Chris Tomlinson finished in eighth.
Pole vaulted Steve Lewis was in his first global final and he finished in joint seventh with a leap of 5.65m. The event was eventually won by favourite,
and injured, Steve Hooker.
